Graffham Down has a healthy population of Dormice on its reserves.  Dormice are protected by law, so we are very lucky to have Chloe Goddard, South Downs National Park Authority Ranger, licenced to carry out dormouse surveys, check our 50 dormouse nest boxes on a regular basis.  The nest boxes are attached to hazel stools in the Paterson Reserve.  Chloe shares the records of what she finds in the boxes with the National Dormouse Monitoring Programme run by the People's Trust for Endangered Species.
The lid of the nestbox is removed.
The box is put into a plastic bag and the dormouse emptied into it so it cannot escape
The Dormouse is put into a bag for weighing.
The dormouse is carefully examined and sexed before returning to the box.
